I’ve always loved writing. Even when I was small (well smaller, I’m still pretty tiny) and I used to draw comics about heroic hamsters (erm…yeah), I used to love coming up with my rodent ‘tails’ of daring deeds and adventure. Why hamsters? Well, I had a couple of them growing up and you’ve got to start somewhere, right? Anyway, I digress.
Writing has always been something I’ve loved, even on those days when my words fail me and I end up producing some obscure piece that should never ever see the light of day. Writing is a part me, I guess. A big part. However cheesy that may sound. Sure, there’s been times where I’ve said to myself, I’ve not got the time to do this, life happens, time slips away and the things you love to do get neglected. But there’s also been those 3am moments where I’ve been so inspired that it doesn’t matter how tired I am, I have to write.
I’ve been writing a lot lately, which is great, and so I was really excited when my application to The Writer’s Arena was accepted. This is basically a site where two writers are given a prompt and have ten days to write their piece based around that topic. After which, the readers vote for which writer they think has the ‘write’ stuff and a winner is chosen.
I’m yet to receive my first prompt, but I’m extremely excited to put pen to paper…or fingers to keyboard, rather. So in light of this, I’ve been given a list of eight questions from the arena guys. Here there are, along with my answers. Enjoy!
1. Do you remember the first story you ever wrote? What was it about?
I can’t even remember what I had for dinner last week to be honest. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember (and apparently as long as I can’t remember too). I don’t know if this really counts, but I love writing poetry and when I was kid, I used to write a lot for my family. Soppy rhymes about how much I love them (with drawings obviously!) and they used to get stuck onto the fridge.
2. What word do you hate?
I don’t really think there is a word I hate, or at least I can’t think of one. I mean, of course there are words that grate on you, but in a way aren’t they the best kind? The words that really produce feeling. That’s what writing is about. Evoking emotion from words.
3. If an octoshark fought a zombie dinosaur in a bear pit, who would win?
What is an octoshark!? I’m guessing a hybrid of an octopus and shark? It sounds terrifying. I’m going with the zombie though. Those guys stop at nothing and have you seen Jurassic Park? Dinosaurs are fierce.
4. What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever tried?
Coincidentally, octopus. I really didn’t want to eat it, but we were on holiday and it was sort of placed in front of me and there was a lot of, “ah you must at least try it.” It was rubbery and something I’d never like to eat again.
5. Where do you find inspiration?
When I’m not looking for it. It creeps up on you and takes you by surprise. Sometimes when I’m thinking too much, I end up writing a load of dribble. I get it from conversations, on walks, dreams, just life experiences. Inspiration is everywhere. You just have to know ‘not’ where to look for it.
6. Who is your nemesis?
Do people have nemeses? How very dramatic. I guess I’ll soon get one when I start the writing battle…bring it on future nemesis! 😉
7. What is your favorite bad movie?
This is tricky. Probably White Chicks.
8. What sound or noise do you love?
I actually really like the tap of high heels on a wooden floor. Is that weird? Probably. It’s especially great when you’re in the high heels. It just sounds cool, like, here I come world.
